Relationships: As an Innovation Coach I work with a great many people who have relationship problems and need conflict resolution. Most people who work in the field of conflict resolution tend to operate from a rather traditional framework, that relies on linear approaches like negotiation and compromise. However, in my work with clients, I have found again and again that the key to resolving a conflict is to look at it from a completely new perspective. To re-frame it. To think outside the box. I use an approach I developed that I call Innovation-Based Conflict Resolution®.
From 2000 until 2002, I worked as a mediator and conflict consultant for the Los Angeles County Court Dispute Resolution Program. This is the largest such program in the country and handles 14,000 mediation cases every year. I received the "Outstanding Case Award" for the years 2000, and also 2001.
Every case is unique, and I use different techniques and approaches. But the one approach that I use more than any other is "re-framing." In re-framing, I look at a case from a different angle or perspective. I look for an "innovation breakthrough." This is the heart of my Innovation-Based Conflict Resolution®. I have used this approach in hundreds of cases, and I used it in both of the court cases that won the "Outstanding Case Awards." On this CD, I show listeners exactly how I use this approach, with actual cases, so that you will be able to use it too.
Christian Spirituality: As an Innovation Coach, I particularly enjoy working with Christians, and helping them to find those breakthroughs of the Spirit that will lead them to a deeper life of faith.
We don't normally think of Christianity as calling us to be innovative or creative, but it does. For example, in several places the Psalms tell us to "Sing a New Song." And Paul tells us that in Christ, "We are a new creation." And of course, in the Gospels, Jesus tells us to "Repent," and also to "Forgive." Both of these commands are calling us to live a new, different kind of life. And we often have to be innovative, and jostle our thinking, to figure out how we're going to live that new life.
And consider the parables that Jesus told. Again and again he shatters our preconceptions. When a lawyer asked jesus, "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus answered with a story about an episode on the road to Jericho. But Jesus surprised his audience by making the hero of the story not a friend, but an enemy, a Samaritan! With this story, and with many others, Jesus is challenging us to think in a new and different way. Again and again Jesus is saying, "Christians, think outside the box!"
